QT Capture Movie

Author: Bob Dougherty.  Based on QT_Capture by Wayne Rasband.
Installation: Download  (QT_CaptureMovie.class and SGCaptureMovie.class) or QT_CaptureMovie.java to the plugins folder.
Requires both QuickTime and QuickTime for Java.
Description: Captures a movie from a QuickTime video source. On the Macintosh, most USB and Firewire cameras are QuickTime compatible.
See instructions for QT installation on Windows machines.  This capability was requested by Perry Schiro.
Instructions: The movie is recorded initially in RAM, and copied to disk when recording is complete.  This reduces the chances for dropped frames.  Other programs that may compete for CPU time should not be running during movie recording.

Make sure virtual memory is turned off.

Do not allocate too much memory to ImageJ.  The movie is captured in free memory.

The camera should be connected and turned on when ImageJ is started

The "Limits" button can be used to limit the number of frames recorded and also to stop recording when memory is nearly full.

The "QT Options" button can set many recording options, but some options may not work in this situation.

After recording, this plugin can play the movie, but it cannot transfer the information to ImageJ.   See below.

Ways to open
QuickTime
movies in
ImageJ:
File->Import->QuickTime Movie...   Puts all of the frames on a stack.  This only works for short clips.
QuickTime Movie Opener                  This is the plugin for File->Import->QuickTime Movie...
QuickTime Grab Movie Frames         Grabs individual frames from a movie of any length onto a stack in ImageJ.
QuickTime Movie Player                    Similar to the player in this plugin.  Only permits viewing.
